Nevadans will make no less than $12 an hour starting July 1

Starting July 1, Nevadans will earn a minimum of $12 per hour, which is an increase from the previous minimum wage of $11.25 per hour, or $10.25 per hour with qualifying health benefits provided by the employer.

Today, the new law comes into force as a result of the debate that Nevada's employees should not face a reduced minimum wage just because their employers provide specific health benefits.

Opponents contended that the alteration might negatively impact employers by eliminating a motivation that prompted them to provide specific health benefits to their workers in return for reducing the employees' hourly pay.

If the federal minimum wage exceeds $12 per hour, the state's minimum wage will be adjusted to match it. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 per hour since 2009 and will trigger the state's increase if it rises above $12 per hour.

Additionally, the ballot measure will abolish the existing approach to implementing cost-of-living adjustments. The proponents argue that the annual adjustments are limited and have consistently failed to match the actual cost of living for workers in Nevada.

From July 1 forward, employees who work over 40 hours in a week and earn $18 per hour or higher will qualify for overtime compensation at a rate of 1.5 times their usual pay.

Starting July 1, employees who work more than eight hours in a 24-hour period or over 40 hours in a week and earn less than $18 per hour will qualify for overtime pay at a rate of 1.5 times their regular pay.

Individuals who are exempt from the minimum wage increase according to the law are those who are under 18 years old, those working for a nonprofit organization in after-school or summer programs, those in a trainee position for 90 days or less, or those covered by a valid collective bargaining agreement.

This table provides information on the minimum wage hikes in all relevant states. Unless stated otherwise, the rates will be in effect starting July 1, 2024. Certain states make annual adjustments to their wages to account for inflation.
